Study Luke!

The writer of Luke's Gospel is traditionally thought of as being the same Luke who is mentioned in Colossians 4:14; a travelling companion of Paul. One of the arguments for this view revolves around the 'we' passages in Acts (e.g. 16:10-17). There are critics of this traditional identification, but no conclusive evidence either way.

The Gospel of Luke, part one of a two volume work with the Acts of the Apostles is thought to have been written somewhere around the 60's, or 70's AD. It is most likely aimed at Gentile readers (certainly people who were not familiar with Semitic language, or Jewish customs) and unlike the Gospels of Matthew and Mark, Luke has a longer section covering the period of Jesus' journey to Jerusalem. Many of the stories told within this 'journey' section (9:51 to 19:27) are unique to Luke and there is a focus on Jesus' concern for the poor and marginalized people within Israel. Luke also stresses and underlines the inclusiveness of Jesus. Presenting a challenge to his readers to follow Jesus' lead, cutting across social boundaries and embracing those who society would regard as 'outsiders'.

If there is a major theme running through Luke, then that theme is salvation. Luke emphasises that salvation is for all and not just for the Jews (2:14 and 2:32). Another theme that pops up as Jesus travels to Jerusalem is more of a question. Who can be a disciple and what does decipleship entail? The five standalone bible studies included here are intended to help the participants consider this question in a personal context.

Group leaders may find the Preach Luke! sermons and notes a useful additional resource. The interaction coordinator, on the planning group, may need to assist small group leaders access this material and navigate the web site.

While the money autobiography does not form part of the five small group studies donated from the Diocese of Winchester, it has been included here as an additional resource for those running the small groups.
