Preach Luke!

The material in Preach Luke! provides preaching resources based on passages from Luke's Gospel. The readings offer powerful images in financial planning for the construction of a tower or the well known parables of the Lost Sheep and the Lost Coin. These parables along with the challenging story of the Rich Man and Lazarus and the enigmatic parable of the Shrewd Manager are found only in Luke and reflect Luke's particular emphasis on money and possessions.

  • All the resources can be accessed from the Preach Luke! lectionary table. and are in MS Word format for ease of editing
  • The material is intended to be used by churches around harvest, a season rich in stewardship themes of the abundant provision of God and our grateful response.
  • Be flexible in using this material. It may form the basis of a five week preaching series on Stewardship. Alternatively just two passages may be selected to sit either side of the main Harvest celebrations.
  • For each passage there is either a sample sermon, extensive background notes for sermon preparation or both.
  • All age worship resource ideas are included for each passage.
  • For each passage there are additional questions which form the basis of small group study resources which complement the preaching series. These can be accessed from the Preach Luke! lectionary table.

The Luke materials are copyright to the Diocese of Winchester and can be used and adapted freely. Permission to reproduce in print or on the web should be sought from Gordon Randall, Stewardship officer in the Diocese. In Winchester this Harvestide material is offered under the heading, 'Our Calling Under God'. The passages are the Common Lectionary Gospel readings for Propers 18-22, Year C. The introduction to the resource was prepared by the Bishop of Southampton, Rt Rev. Paul Butler who writes:

It is our hope and prayer that these sermons and notes will prove to be of value in many parishes across the Diocese this September and October, as we celebrate God’s generosity to us in Harvest; and as we continue to explore together what it means for us all to be a Generous Community.
