Supporting youth ministry leaders
An important task of the planning group is to ensure that there is at the least discussion around involving both children and young people in Giving in Grace. Both children and young people are part of today's church and it is both appropriate and relevant that issues of giving should be raised with them providing it is done sensitively.
However, involving teenagers in Giving in Grace is not a decision the planning group can or should take in isolation. The support of the leaders of children's young people's ministry is crucial. A member of the planning group should co-ordinate a meeting with the relevant leaders in the church to discuss the matter.
- Leaders themselves may be unaware of Giving in Grace and need some basic information. They will also need help in knowing how to access the web based TeenTalk resources of the programme.
- Leaders may also have some questions or even hesitations about their own personal response to Giving in Grace that need to be discussed. They will only be able to share with their young people what they feel confident about in themselves.
- The paper Money Matters to Teens will be useful as a framework for discussion with youth leaders. Their own personal response to Giving in Grace and their willingness to support the involvement of young people should not be taken for granted.
- It will be helpful to make available a copy of the web page Differentiation or even the additional discussion paper on the subject. The young people in our youth groups are the children of people who belong to the Core, the Congregation or Fringe of our church congregations - or perhaps do not belong at all. Be sensitive to the different relationships with the church.
- When discussing Giving in Grace with youth ministry leaders it may also be helpful to make available copies of the Theology discussion paper which sets out the thinking behind Giving in Grace.
