The Joy of Generosity: How Queen’s Hall Found New Life Through Stewardship
“We are indebted to Giving in Grace
for inspiring us to move forward as a church
and for supporting us every step of the way.”

Started Giving in Grace: April 2016
In the centre of Wigan, Queen’s Hall Methodist Church faced a financial crossroads. After three years of losses — one planned, one unexpected — the leadership knew something had to change. What followed was a journey of faith, vision, and generosity that transformed not just their finances, but their church community.
A Turning Point
In 2016, Queen’s Hall launched the Giving in Grace stewardship programme. Led by Church Treasurer Brian Rollins and supported by John and Margaret Parker, the church embraced a new way of thinking about giving.
“Writing our Case Statement helped us to focus on our shared vision and where we wanted to go as a church community.”
The leadership team planned four weeks of preaching on giving and stewardship, culminating in a sermon by the Bishop of Liverpool. The response was overwhelmingly positive.
“Everyone was ready for the programme when it came.”
Faith in Action
Despite being in the red, the church dared to dream. They envisioned hiring a part-time children’s and family worker — a bold move for a struggling church. But with faith and strategic planning, they made it happen.
“On the face of it, a church in the red couldn’t possibly manage this… but it became part of our Case Statement and something we really started to believe could be possible.”
Nicola, a recent graduate from the congregation, was hired temporarily. Her impact was immediate and profound — restarting the toddler group, leading worship, running Sunday school, and organizing the Christmas party.
“She has absolutely revolutionised our children’s work.”
Financial Renewal
The months following Giving in Grace saw dramatic improvements. Weekly giving increased, debt was eradicated, and the church secured a Methodist District grant. Loose change giving, standing orders, and Gift Aid all rose — even spontaneous donations came in.
“Financially, we were in a much healthier place as we entered 2017.”
Queen’s Hall revisited the programme in 2017, continuing to build on its success. The congregation’s mindset had shifted.
“Some of our congregation told us they had never dreamt of giving more until we started Giving in Grace. It’s really challenged them.”
The Joy of Generosity
“It has been a delight to have made known the joy of giving and being generous, which so many people are unaware of.” said Margaret. The leadership team remains committed to the Scriptural principles of stewardship, inspired by the model that Giving in Grace provides.
