Weekly giving envelopes

Weekly giving envelopes are a long standing and much valued way of making regular gifts to our local church. However, envelopes can no longer be commended as a robust and key element of planned giving. There have been significant changes in the pattern of church attendance and increasingly we are moving from cash to card, contactless and mobile payments.
For some years patterns of church attendance have been changing, people physically in church less often. This puts pressure on giving envelopes based on weekly attendance. These changing patterns were accelerated by the Covid pandemic which saw a rapid movement away from cash to contactless card and mobile payments.

Weekly envelopes and more so open plate giving are extremely vulnerable ways to give regularly to our church. There re much better options, chiefly the Parish Giving Scheme (PGS) - and Standing Orders where the PGS is not used. Contactless giving units for in church giving are increasingly popular. Weekly envelopes should be phased out and not offered to new members.

Of course, sensitivity matters. Some value envelopes and the tangible connection of worship and giving. Some still manage personal finances with cash and perhaps a million in the UK don't have a bank account. Envelopes may continue for while but not as a primary way to give regularly to our church.
